Music Curriculum statement

At St. Joseph’s the children have access to a range of musical experiences. Using ‘The Charanga Music School Scheme’, they are taught through an integrated, practical, exploratory and child-led approach to musical learning. The dimensions of music weave through the three units taught in each year group to encourage the development of musical skills through listening and appraising, creating, exploring and performing. They are given opportunities to express themselves using a variety of instruments, sing a wide selection of songs and listen to music from all cultures and styles. They will increase their skills and knowledge of composition and sing with greater clarity and improve performance. This leads to greater self-confidence as well as a better understanding and appreciation of Music.

Severn Arts

We work with Severn Arts to offer a variety of peripatetic music lessons with small group guitar, ukulele and violin lessons currently available. Severn Arts also provide whole-class, First Access Music Education (FAME), cornet lessons in Year 4. Taught by a Severn Arts specialist, all pupils can take part and learn about performing and composing, listening and appraising, posture and technique. Children are also taught the concepts of pitch (high and low sounds), dynamics (loud and quiet), basic structure, appropriate notation and vocabulary, and will develop an awareness of mood in the music.

Rocksteady

Rocksteady is a band-based peripatetic music service delivered by extensively trained musicians who can inspire a life-long love of playing music. Children who sign up are sorted into bands and enjoy a 30-minute session each week which leads to a performance each term. The Rocksteady Programme is for all children aged 4-11 and is proven to progress musicianship, confidence and teamwork skills with no prior experience necessary.

The Star Project

The Star Project provides Musical Theatre training for children and they offer a weekly after-school club at St Joseph’s. They create an exciting and energetic place to be for young people and have supported thousands of students in their development in the arts and with their personal confidence all across Worcestershire. Each term, children can sign up for an after-school club which results in a fantastic musical theatre production in front of parents and the whole school. So far, we have seen incredible performances of Annie and Matilda and we are eagerly awaiting their performance of Shrek the Musical this summer.

Young Voices

For over 29 years, Young Voices has been at the forefront in delivering an extraordinary concert experience for primary school children and this is why it isn't just any children's choir concert; it's the largest children's choir concerts in the world! They prioritise supporting teachers with resources and guidance while ensuring children have a seamless, safe and unforgettable choir experience. Each year, we take a group of children to Birmingham Resorts World arena.
